When mice are appearing throughout a home, placing a few traps may not address the conditions allowing them to keep returning.

During a special home visit, the Rodents Away Odor Free team worked with a family experiencing severe mouse activity in their kitchen, living areas, closets, bedrooms and crawlspace. The homeowners had previously used traps and poison, but wanted to move toward a more proactive mouse-prevention plan, particularly because they had small dogs in the home.

What Was Causing the Mouse Activity?

The inspection uncovered several conditions that made the home easier for mice to access and inhabit:

• Clutter that provided hiding and nesting areas
• Woodchips stored in the crawlspace
• Open wall and insulation access points
• Visible mouse tunnels through insulation
• Nesting material inside a closet
• A likely exterior entry point under the siding

Rather than focusing on only one room or entry point, the family needed a whole-home approach.

The Mouse-Prevention Plan

The process followed several important steps.

What Happened After the Visit?

Approximately two to three weeks later, the homeowner reported that mouse activity had declined substantially.

They said they were catching fewer and fewer mice in their traps until they felt the traps were no longer necessary. The family later purchased additional sachets to maintain coverage in areas where activity had previously occurred.

This was a single-home field observation rather than a controlled scientific trial. However, it demonstrates how a combined approach may help homeowners address a difficult mouse problem:

Clean affected areas, remove nesting opportunities, place repellent sachets where activity occurs, allow mice time to leave and then seal potential entry points.
