What is it and how does it work?

Rodents Away Odor Free's Expandable Straw Foam is an industrial-strength polyurethane foam designed to fill, seal, and insulate small cracks, gaps, crevices, and openings. Applied through an easy-to-use straw applicator, the foam expands up to approximately three times its dispensed size before curing into a durable physical barrier. It can be used indoors or outdoors and, once fully cured, can be trimmed, sanded, painted, or stained.

For rodent prevention, the foam's role is to seal potential entry points. It does not repel mice or drive mice away.

Is there a repellent ingredient in the expandable foam?

No. Rodents Away Odor Free's Expandable Straw Foam does not contain a mouse-repellent ingredient and does not work as a repellent.

It is a polyurethane foam sealant. Its role is to create a physical barrier by filling and sealing openings. The product SDS identifies polyurethane foam components and propellants, rather than a mouse-repellent active ingredient.

This is an important distinction from Rodents Away Odor Free's Slow-Release Mouse Repellent Sachets, which are the repellent component of the Rodents Away Odor Free system.

Is it safe for my children, pets, and or other animals like livestock?

Children, pets, livestock, and other animals should be kept away from the area while the foam is being applied and while it is curing.

The uncured product is a pressurized, extremely flammable aerosol and the SDS warns that it can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Use it only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, wear suitable gloves and eye protection, and keep it away from heat, sparks, flames, and other ignition sources.

Once fully cured, the current product information describes the foam as inert. Children and animals should still not be allowed to chew, ingest, or otherwise disturb the cured material. For barns or other livestock areas, keep animals away during application and curing and do not apply the foam where animals can readily chew it. 

Does the Expandable Straw Foam actually work?

The foam works by physically filling and sealing openings. It expands after application and cures into a hardened barrier that can make it more difficult for rodents, insects, drafts, moisture, and other outside elements to pass through a properly sealed opening.

However, it is not described as a mouse repellent or as a guaranteed rodent-proof material. Rodents can chew through spray foam, particularly when they are motivated to regain access through an established entry point. For vulnerable or larger openings, metal mesh, hardware cloth, flashing, or another rodent-resistant material can be incorporated with the foam.

How will it help get rid of mice in my indoor spaces?

The Expandable Straw Foam does not remove or repel mice that are already inside. It is the sealing step of the Rodents Away Odor Free system.

For an active mouse issue, first clean affected areas and place Rodents Away Odor Free's Slow-Release Mouse Repellent Sachets where activity is occurring. Give the mice time to leave. Once mouse activity has stopped, identify and seal cracks, gaps, and entry points using the Expandable Straw Foam. This avoids accidentally sealing mice inside the space.

How quickly will I notice results?

The foam begins expanding immediately during application, dries to the touch in approximately 10 minutes, and should be allowed 12 to 24 hours to fully cure.

There is no separate "mouse-repelling" timeframe because the foam does not repel mice. If you are treating an existing mouse problem, Rodents Away Odor Free's current sachet FAQ states that full repellent effectiveness is typically seen within 1 to 3 weeks. Wait until activity has stopped before sealing suspected entry and exit points.

Can I use it proactively as protection against mice?

Yes. You do not need to wait until you have a mouse problem.

Inspect your home, garage, cabin, RV, shed, barn, warehouse, or other structure for small cracks, gaps, and utility penetrations that could provide access. Filling and sealing these openings proactively can make entry more difficult before mouse activity develops. Rodents Away Odor Free Slow-Release Mouse Repellent Sachets can then be placed inside appropriate spaces as a separate repellent layer.

How do I use the Expandable Straw Foam?

Wear protective clothing, suitable gloves, and eye protection and make sure the area is well ventilated. Clean oil, grease, dust, and debris from the application area, protect nearby surfaces with tape or plastic if necessary, and lightly mist the area with water.

Shake the can vigorously for approximately one minute, attach the straw adaptor, and keep the can upside down while dispensing. Insert the straw toward the back of the opening and fill approximately 30% of the available space, allowing the foam to expand rather than completely filling the opening with uncured foam.

Allow approximately 10 minutes for the foam to become touch-dry and 12 to 24 hours for full curing. Once cured, excess material can be trimmed or sanded. Exterior foam exposed to direct sunlight should be painted, stained, covered, or otherwise protected from UV exposure.

How much of the Expandable Straw Foam do I need to use?

Only fill an opening approximately 30% with uncured foam. The product can expand to approximately three times its dispensed size, so overfilling is unnecessary and can result in excess expansion.

Each can contains 340 g (12 oz.). Plan your project and identify all of the openings you intend to seal before beginning. The can should be treated as a single-use product, because foam can harden inside the straw applicator after use and prevent reliable reuse.

How long could the deterring barrier last, once the expandable foam has fully cured?

There is no fixed replacement schedule for the cured foam. Unlike the Slow-Release Mouse Repellent Sachets, the foam does not gradually release an active ingredient or "wear out" after a set number of months.

The barrier can remain in place as long as the cured foam and surrounding surfaces remain intact. Periodically inspect sealed areas for physical damage, gaps caused by building movement, weathering, UV deterioration, or signs of chewing. Repair damaged areas when necessary.

Exterior foam should be protected from prolonged direct sunlight by painting, staining, siding, or another suitable covering after curing.

Where can I use the Expandable Straw Foam?

The foam is designed for both interior and exterior applications and can be applied in temperatures as low as -18°C (approximately -0.4°F). Suitable structures include homes, cabins, offices, garages, sheds, barns, warehouses, trailers, and RVs.

Common applications include gaps around pipes and utility penetrations, wiring openings, windows and doors, sill plates, rim joists, wall and floor openings, foundations, and other small cracks or gaps.

Do not use it on active water leaks, in large structural openings that require proper construction materials, or in areas exposed to continuous high heat. During application and storage, keep the aerosol can away from heat, sparks, open flames, hot surfaces, and other ignition sources. The SDS also states that the container should not be exposed to temperatures above 50°C (122°F).

Could mice and or other small pests gnaw through the foam once cured?

Yes, it is possible. Our expandable foam mixture is not represented as chew-proof or rodent-proof.

Rodents can chew through spray foam and recommends rodent-resistant materials like our Slow-Release Mouse Repellent. However, customers may also use steel wool or metal materials for rodent entry points, with caulk or spray foam used to help secure and seal them.

For small, low-risk gaps, the cured foam provides a useful physical barrier. Where there is an established entry point or significant chewing pressure, combine the foam with an appropriate metal barrier for stronger exclusion.

How do I dispose of the Expandable Straw Foam can?

Follow your municipality's requirements for aerosol and hazardous-waste disposal. The product SDS instructs users to dispose of the contents and container in accordance with applicable local, regional, and national regulations and identifies the product and container for hazardous-waste disposal.

Do not puncture, cut, burn, or incinerate the can, even when it appears empty. An aerosol container can continue to present a fire or explosion hazard after use. Do not pour remaining contents into drains, onto the ground, or into waterways.
